Depth of Cover Surveys | 4 Rivers Surveying | Full Service Land Surveying

A depth of cover survey measures the distance or “cover” over a pipeline. New federal regulations such as the “PIPES ACT of 2016” mandate the safe cover for oil and gas pipelines. Also some States or jurisdictions require higher standards in certain areas such as river crossings, other water bodies or near railroads. These regulations are meant to protect the safety of the public. Not all pipelines currently meet the new standards. However, all pipelines need to meet these standards and are required to prove they meet these standards. The best method is to have depth of cover surveys completed. 4 Rivers Surveying Inc. has completed over 1000 miles of pipeline depth of cover surveys. 4 Rivers Surveying will measure the cover using the latest and most accurate equipment. The measurement data will be supplied to the client in the format they request. The new federal regulations also require the data be accessible to the public on a geographic information system format.

If depth of cover surveys detects cover which does not meet the regulations, the pipeline operators will be notified. Human activities such as farming and new construction or natural erosion are the most common reasons pipelines do not have the cover they need.

4 Rivers Surveying Inc. uses the latest in global positioning system (GPS) equipment to perform the surveys. We use survey grade GPS and methods to obtain a position. We also use the latest underground utility location equipment to get the depth.

Our staff is trained and certified for pipeline locating. We also have authorized evaluators so we can train and certify our own staff.
